BIRTH ORDER , FAMILY SIZE AND SCHIZOPHRENIA IN KOREA

  • 8

Because of multiple factors effecting schizophrenia are involved, there are many controversial reports about the relationship between birth order, family sizes and schizophrenia. But it seems to be wise to study above subject in our traditional culture. Data for the sample were obtained from 90 male schizophrenics admitted to Neurop sychiatric Service, 17th Army Hospital and 198 male Schizophrenics, 96 female schizophrenics admitted to The National Mental Hospital. Tabulations were included all 375 schizophrenics according to the sex, birth order and family size, and the significant data were analysed as the method of Chi2. The meaningful results among the birth order, family size and schizophrenia are as follow; 1) Overrepresentative trend of first born appeared in both sexes without significant difference between men and women. 2) Number of siblings in schizophrenic family is larger than the number of siblings in formal. 3) Although complex psychosocial interactions are involved, consistant relationship was found between family size and birth order effects in schizophrenics. 4) In whole patients, more schizophrenics were earlier born than the later. 5) In small family, overrepresentative trend of first born are observed without significance. 6) If they were from large family, almost schizophrenics are much more frequent in the first born rather than the last. 7) In whole patients, more schizophrenics were first born than the last.
