The author described the traditional Korean underst anding of enuresis and 4,autanimkutw, and compare this with the psychoanalytic understanding of thes phenomena. Korean mothers traditionally understood the relatioi between the playing with fire and bedwetting at night but did not understand that these two phenomena wen caused by the same hostility or revenge generated by the interpersonal conflict in waking hours. However, Korean mothers traditionally understood the syndrome of “autanunkut” which is almost the same as those of anaclitic depression of Spitz. Anaclitic depression is caused by the separation from mother, however, wautanunkut” is caused by the anticipation or the actual advent of new babyr that is, mother,s pregnancy oi birth of new baby, which is partial separation from mother.
