“末稍性顔面神經麻揮의 臨床的考察”

A clinical and statistical study was made on 440 cases of Peripheral Facal Paralysis that had been managed at the Outpatient Clinic of the Nenropsychiatry of S.N.U. Hospital from January, 1955 to March 1963. Among data obtained are: 1. In 77.5% of the patients, their age distribution was between 21 and 50. There seems to be no significant difference in Sex and affected side. 2. More than 70 of the patients come to the clinic for aid within a month from the onset of the paralysis, while about 16% after 6 months or more. 3. In 25 of 44o cases injury and otogenic infection of the nerve accounted for the palysy, and the remainder was included into so-called Bell s palsy. In 76 cases of this 415 Bell’s palsy group, histories of remarkable cold exposure, hang-over, flu-likeh suffering and hypertension without G.V.A soon before the onset were noted, which might be considered as precipitating factors 4. Seasonal prevalence in the Autumn and Spring, especially in the months of March, November and October was observed in this study. 5. Sensory symptoms accompanied were seen in 116 of 440 cases, two most frequent of which were loss or impairment of taste and pain within and behind the ear. 6. Main therapeutic means comprised electric stimulation treatment combined with vitamins or analgesics administration in more than 85 % of the cases. 7. Follow-up of at least 6 months, duration on 30 cases of Bell’s palsy revealed complete recovery in 18 and incomplete or no recovery in 12. Prognosis appears to be better the younger the age is, the earlier the start of extensive treatment. Most of the complete recovery group got restored function within 8 weeks.
