중서부 신석기시대 편년과 패총 이용전략에 대한 새로운 이해

New Understandings of the Central-western Korean Neolithic Chronology and Shellmidden Exploitation Strategy

본고는 중서부 신석기시대 기존 편년안의 문제점을 지적하고 대안을 제시하고자 작성되었다. 현재의 편년안은 토기문양이 시간차를 반영한다는 검증되지 않은 전제하에 토기문양의 나열과 교차편년에 의거하여 진행되고 있다. 그러나 본고는 이 전제에 의문을 제기하면서, 기존의 편년이 토기문양의 지역성을 고려하지 않고 있으며, 북한 고고학의 연구성과를 무비판적으로 답습하고 있다는 점을 비판한다. 또한 패총의 점유방식을 고려하지 않은 유물복합체 간의 교차편년과 순서배열의 문제도 제기한다. 대안으로서, 본고는 중서부지역 신석기시대 유적을 주거유적과 한정적 행위장소로 구분하고, 패총은 여러 집단이 병참적 이동에 의해 일시적으로 반복점유한 것임을 주장한다. 따라서 주거유적과 한정적 행위장소의 유물 구성은 차이가 있을 수밖에 없으며, 패총 출토 토기군의 구성이 특정 시기를 나타내는 것이 아니라 지역성을 반영한다는 점을 분석을 통해 검증하였다. 분석 결과와 탄소연대를 볼 때, 중서부지역 신석기시대 후기에는 다양한 문양전통이 지역에 따라 공존하고 있었다고 생각된다.

In this paper we criticize current chronologies of the Central-western Korean Neolithic and propose an alternative explanation. Based on an untested assumption that the Central-western Korean ceramic design is time-sensitive, the existing chronologies employ cross-dating and seriation of ceramic designs as the main dating methods. Questioning this assumption, we criticize the existing chronologies that they do not take geographical variation into account, and that they unconditionally follow the chronological scheme of the North Korean archaeology. We also question the reliability of the methods of current chronology, i.e., cross-dating and seriation, which do not consider the hunter-gatherer strategy for shellmidden exploitation. As an alternative, we divide the Central-western Korean Neolithic sites into residential sites and limited activity stations, and propose that the shellmiddens in the Korean West Sea were exploited repeatedly but temporarily by various groups on the basis of logistical mobility. We demonstrate that the composition of ceramic assemblages from shellmiddens differs from that from residential sites and that it does not indicate the timing of its formation but is a proxy measure of exploitation range. Both the results of our analysis and radiocarbon dates suggest that in the late Neolithic of the Central-western Korea various stylistic traditions coexisted.
