베이비부머 은퇴 남성의 내러티브 정체성 탐구: 고학력 중산층 은퇴자를 중심으로

Narrative Identity of Highly Educated, Middle-Class, Retired Male Baby Boomers

본 연구의 목적은 베이비부머 은퇴 남성의 내러티브 정체성을 탐구하는 것이다. 고학력 중산층에 해당되는 베이비부머 은퇴 남성 5명을 대상으로 직업, 가족, 자기계발, 공동체 영역의 경험에 관하여 면담하였으며 면담자료를 Clandinin과 Connelly, 2000, 소경희, 강현석, 조덕주, 박민정 역, 2007)가 제시한 내러티브 탐구방법과 절차에 따라 분석하였다. 분석결과 시간성 차원의 경험은 씨줄의 내러티브로, 상호성 차원의 경험은 날줄의 내러티브로 구성되었으며, 두 차원을 아우르는 내러티브는 <다섯 징검다리: 가난 ⌒ 배움 ⌒ 성공 ⌒ 치유 ⌒ 체면>의 도식으로 재구성되었다. 이는 베이비부머 은퇴 남성의 내러티브 정체성에 관한 주요 주제들을 함축하며 정체성 양상을 전체적으로 보여준다. 본 연구는 기존의 베이비부머 은퇴 남성의 연구 지평을 확장시켰다는데 의의가 있으며 베이비부머 은퇴 남성의 심리사회적 역동에 대한 복잡한 이해가 요구되는 상담모형 및 교육 프로그램 개발의 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 본 연구의 시사점에 대해서 논의하고 후속연구를 위해 제언하였다.

Objectives: This study set out to explore the narrative identity of retired male baby boomers. Methods: Five retired male baby boomers were interviewed about their experiences in their occupations, families, self-development, and communities. The interview data were analyzed according to the narrative inquiry methods and procedures presented by Clandinin and Connelly (2007). Results: The story of the participants’ temporal dimension was composed of a column line, and the story of the participant’s interaction dimension was composed of a raw line. Through the analysis, the researchers constructed a five-step scheme: Poverty, Learning, Success, Healing, and Face Saving. Conclusions: This scheme implies a major theme for the narrative identity of baby boomer retired men, showing the overall picture of their identity and both contributing to and extending the research horizon. Implications and practical plans for educational and counseling practices are discussed, as are suggestions for follow-up research.
