We histopathologically observed the tissue reaction around several new types of blade implants in the mandibles of dogs. Those implants which we used were submergible implants which took two stage insertion technique, and shape memory metal (Nitinol) implants whose shape could be changed by thermal change after insertion, which could prevent the sinking tendency of old-used blade implant. As the control group we used the Free Design Blade Implant(F. D. B. I.) which could be made up of various size. With general anesthesia, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd premolars of five mongrel dogs were pulled out. Three months later,, we implanted three different sizes of six F.D.B.I. and shape memory implants in the mandibles of four dogs. On their left side of the mandibles, blade implants with head were inserted and on their right side, blade implants without head were inserted. Two submergible implants were implanted in the mandible of the last dog and three months later, the post was fixed on its left side only. Six months after implantation, all mandibles were removed and specimens were made by routine method. Those specimens were stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin, MassorrTrichrome,VarrGieson and Reticulin. The results were as follows ; 1. There was inflammation on the neck area of all blade implants with head and relatively thick fibrotic capsule on the F.D.B.I. with head. But tissue reaction of all implants was favorable. 2. From the samples of the F.D.B.I. with head, we found that the larger size implant had less mobility, thinner fibrotic capsule and less bone resorption tendency. 3. The fibrotic capsule of the F .D .B .I. with head was composed of two layers. The inner layer was composed of acellular collagenous fibers which ran prallel to the implant surface, and outer layer was composed of collagenous fibers which ran irregularly like meshwork, attached to the bone. 4. In the case of blade implants without head, very thin fibrotic tissue covered the implants and in some area, bone was directly contacted to the implant surface. 5. In the case of the shape memory and the submergible implant with head, there was less mobility, thinner fibrotic capsule and less bone resorption tendency than that of F .D .B .I. with head.
