Newly developed titanium based alloys (Ti-20Zr-WNb-XTa-YPd-ZIn, Ti-20Zr-WNb-XTa- Y Pd,Ti-15Zr-WNb-XTa-YPd) which do not contian toxic metallic components were designed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) with alloy design techniques using Zr, Nb, Ta, Pd, and In which are known as non-toxic elements. Three new titanium alloys were compared with currently used implant metals, namely, pure Ti and Ti-6A1-4V alloy, in terms of mechanical and corrosion resistance, cytotoxicity and ossoritegration properties. New designed alloys showed comparable mechanical properties with that of the Ti- 6A1-4V alloy and good bicompatibility equal to or superior to currently used pure titanium and Ti-6A1-4V for dental implants. The unique combination of mechanical, corrosion, and bicompatible properties makes newly designed alloys well-suited for improvement in the long-term performance of dental implants. Five commercially available dental implant systems were investigated with respect to surface topography and compared to new dental implant manufactured in Korea made with new titanium based alloy using scanning electon microscopic( SEM ) evaluation. On the basis of the totality of the data from these experiments it can be concluded new dental implant manufactured in Korea with newly designed titanium alloy is able to provide good surface topography and accuracy to warrant further investigation of its potential as a new dental implant.
