The purpose of this study was to design the KH98 Standard Mandible , and evaluate the stress distribution on mandible with the traditional mechanical 3-D finite element method on the several situations of masticatory function . The 3-D finite element model was a 3-unit fixed partial denture having a mandibular 1st premolar and animplant replacing mandibular 1st molar as abutments. The stress distributions on model were evaluate dunder 133N vertical, 20N horizontal, and 45° oblique load. Hypermesh 2 . lb ( Altair Co ., USA ) as a pre-, post-processor and NASTRAN (MSC Co ., USA ) as a solver were used to evaluate the stress distribution on mandible with the traditional mechanical 3-D finite element method for this study. The results were as follow s : 1. The KH 98 Stand ard Mandible as a 3-D finite element model was very valuable as a visual means to evaluate the stress distribution on mandible on the variable several situations of masticatory function with ease. 2. In the 3-D finite element model , the area of maximum Von-Mises stress was shown at the mesio-cervical area of implant under 133N vertical load , and the linguo - cervical area of 1st. premolar under 20N horizontal and 45° oblique load . There was a cantilever effect in all models. 3. In making the im plant supported superstructure, it was very important to design a proper occlusal surface for minimizing lateral force, because the stress distribution and value on 20N horizontal and 45° oblique load applied were similar to them on 133N vertical load.
