Finite element analysis method is a valuable tool to study about stress distribution in implantology. Although shape of mandible and/or maxillar is not an axis symmetric structure, lots of studies have been done in axis symmetric models. This is for the shake of convenience of modeling with computer but today s computer technology is progressed enough to caluate such a complex problems finely. This study evaluated the non-axis symmetric FEA models applying theses models to study stress distribution in vertical bone loss condition. From the right second premolar to the right second molar of mandible was modeled according to the CT scan data of a dentated patient. Teeth were removed and an implant (ᄍ) 4.0x10.0mm) was placed in the first molar area. Axial, buccolingual and oblique force was applied independently to the center of the implant crown. The maximum von Mises stress value and stress contour was observed. Within the study, the following conclusions were drawn. The contour of stress distribution was showed some different patterns according to the shape of models. But the maximum von Mises stress was showed no difference. For the simple computing of stress values in implant stress study, it seems available to use axis symmetric model, but for the study of stress pattern it seems importent to consider the details of model.
