대학박물관의 기능과 역할

Functions and Roles of University Museums

대학박물관은 기능적인 면에서 일반박물관과 크게 다른 점은 없다. 즉 대학 박물관도 유물과 유물에 관한 자료를 수집, 보존하고 조사ㆍ연구하여 전시하는 기능을 기본적으로 담당해야 한다. 그러나 대학이라고 하는 특수한 교육환경속에 존립하고 그 주 대상이 대학인이므로 인해서 그 역할면에서는 일반 박물관과는 다소 다른 차원의 교육기능을 수행해야하고 또 그 수집ㆍ연구ㆍ전시의 기능을 수행함에 있어서도 일반박물관과는 범위와 방법, 그리고 성격을 다소 달리할 수 있다고 본다. 대학박물관은 대학인이나 일반인이 일반박물관에서 맛볼 수 없는 경험을 줄 수도 있고, 궁극적으로는 일반대중의 문화교육에도 이바지할 수 있어야만 한다고 본다. 즉 대학이 운영관리하고 대학캠퍼스 내에 위치하고 해당 대학의 학생ㆍ교수ㆍ직원들이 주 대상이긴 하나, 일반인에게도 열려있어 한 지역의 훌륭한 문화공간으로 자리잡을 수도 있어야 한다고 본다.

University museums are not so different in roles and functions from non-academic museurns. They also have to fullfill educational roles and carry out functions of collecting, research, preservation and conservation, and exhibition. But one important distinction is that their key audiences are not the general public but the students in their 20s and that they should be prepared for these college students youthful outlook and cultural and intellectual needs in contents development and in manners of presentation. Korean students from their early teens go through examination hells with so little cultural exposures with their EQ level rapidly sinking. The collegian time is the first and probably the last period to most male Korean students are better off as their society is less rigid, yet the importance of having a richer college life cannot be overemphasized, since they are much less inhibited and open to the cultural and the artistic stimuli while on campus. University museums which fail to attract student visitors do need to go through serious self-examination to find reasons and solutions to rectify the situation and transfrom themselves as active participants in campus life as the center of art and culture.
