우리나라의 古瓦중에서 특히 막새기와에는 제작당시에 유행 또는 선호되었던 문양이 施紋되어 있어 일찍부터 기와연구의 지름길로 인식되면서 주된 고찰 대상이 되어 왔다. 이 중에서 統一新羅時代의 암, 수막새들은 그 문양과 종류의 다양함에서 다른 나라의 것과는 비교하기 어려울 정도이다. 本橋에서는 막새문양면에 시문된 무늬는 같은데. 周緣部 높이ㆍ接合技法ㆍ上下周緣의 有無 등에서 차이를 드러낸 3종 8점에 대한 고찰을 통하여 다음과 같은 결론에 도달하게 되었다. 1. 고찰한 3종류의 기와들은 세부형태의 큰 차이에도 불구하고 종류별로 같은 시기에 제작되었을 것으로 본다. 2. 기와제작기법 그 자체가 편년의 기준이 될 수 있는 時間的 範圍는 어떤 기법이 처음 導入ㆍ發生되었을 무렵에 그 기법에 의하여 제작되었던 유물에만 適用可能하다고 생각된다. 3. 이러한 고찰 결과에 따라 古瓦編年에는 그것이 출토된 層位, 共伴遺物(특히 토기) 비교 등 외에도 다양한 방법에 의한 접근이 필요함을 再强調하고자 한다.
The roof-end tile among Korean old roof tiles has been recognized as a short cut to the study of roof tiles. Because the roof-end tile was stamped out with the design in fashion or preferred by the people at that time. So many researchers and scholars have studied and examined it. This study examines 8 articles of 3 kinds among Shilla roof-end tiles which have the same design but are different according to their production methods such as the method with an upper or lower edge, the connecting method or the method in breadth. We come to the conclusion as follows: 1. Each kinds of roof-end tiles which we examine are produced at the same time instead of a big difference of the detail form. 2. The time scope in which the production method of roof tile itself is standardized as a production chronicle can be applied to only the remains of which its production method had been introduced first. 3. Accordingly, we emphasize that fixing the chronicle of old roof tiles needs the various approaches including excavated strata. the comparison of accompanied remains(especially pottery) and so on.
