The Management of Buddist temple in Namhae by Jung-An Family

무신집권기 최고 실력자인 최우와 더불어 재조대장경 판각에 큰 역할을 정안가에서 감당할 수 있었던 배경은 『高麗史』 등의 사서와 정안이 작성한 각종 비문과 불교경전의 誌文 등을 통하여 확인할 수 있었다. 당시 정안가가 재조대장경 판각에 최우와 더불어 큰 역할을 담담할 수 있었던 것은 당대 최고 실력자 최우와 처남매부지간이었던 인척관계와 지금의 남해·하동 지역이 세거지인 경제적 여건, 그리고 불교에 대한 이해가 깊은 불자로서의 정안의 종교정체성과 선대부터 맺어온 고승들과의 친분관계가 있었기에 가능하였다. 그렇기 때문에 정안가는 자신의 세거지인 하동·남해의 경제적 여력을 근간으로 자신들이 경영하던 사저를 사원으로 재축하여 재조대장경 판각작업에 활용하였을 것이다. 최근에 이루어진 남해군 고현면 일원의 발굴성과를 살펴보면 정안이 대장경 판각을 위해 자신의 私邸[別墅]를 정림사로 고쳤다는 『고려사』의 기록과 혜심의 어록에 등장하는 강월암으로 추정되는 유력한 건물지가 확인되었다. 아울러 이들 건물지에서 은병 일개를 시납하였다는 명문기와가 발굴되어, 당시 정안가에서 재조대장경 판각을 위해 경영하였던 사원 운영에 인근 상급향리들의 경제적 지원이 있었을 것으로 판단된다.

During the Military Rule Period in Goryeo, ‘Jung-An Family’ who was on leading positions of manufacturing the Re-engraved Tripitaka Koreana(再雕大藏經) with Choi woo, a potentate man during that Period. This article examines history books written by Jung-An Family, including History of Goryeo(高麗史), and compares various epitaphs and records in Buddhism scriptures inscribed by Jung-An. There are three reasons that Jung-An Family could play a crucial role in manufacturing the Koreana. First, Jung-An was Choi woo’s brother-in-law. Second, Namhae area was stronghold of Jung Family as well as a competent area for crafting the Koreana. Third and the last, Jung-An had close relationships with eminent buddhist monks in Goryeo, so that he was a pious buddhist. These three reasons made Jung-An Family use its financial power to manufacture Koreana, even donating its private residence for the Koreana. In Gohyun town in Namhae province, a building site was excavated and it proves that Jung-An remodeled his own residence(私邸[別墅]) to Junglim temple(定林社) for manufacturing the Koreana. This finding accords closely with descriptions of Kangwolam in History of Goryeo and analects of Hyesim(慧諶). Moreover, roof tiles were founded in the excavated site and the scription on them reads that he donated an Eunbyeong(silver coin) in this site. It suggests that management of temple by Jung-An Family for manufacturing the Koreana were supported from local officials.
