이민자 부부의 영어 역량과 학습 의지가 배우자의 자존감과 행복감에 끼치는 영향-뉴질랜드 교민 사례

Influences of English Language Competence and Learning Intention on the Partner s Self-esteem and Happiness: the Case of Korean Immigrant Couples in New Zealand

비영어권 국가인 한국의 교민들이 영어권 거주국에서 발휘하는 언어적 능력은 현지 동화와 사회 활 동에 있어 중요한 도구이며, 가족 구성원의 삶에도 직간접으로 작용한다. 이에 따라 교민 부부의 영어 능력과 학습 의지는 자신은 물론 배우자의 자아 존중과 개인 행복에도 영향을 준다고 하겠다. 사회언어학 관점과 성인 교육 맥락에서, 동 연구는 해외 거주 부부의 영어구사 역량과 영어학습 의 지가 자존감과 행복감에 영향을 끼치는지 보았다. 이에 본 연구에 적합한 이론 모형인 행위자-상대 자 상호의존모델(APIM)을 근간으로 자신(행위자)과 배우자(상대자)간 독립 변수(영어구사 역량․ 영어학습 의지)와 종속 변수(자존감․행복감)의 인과 관계를 설명하고자, 동 연구자들의 체류 경험 이 있고 현직 활동 중인 뉴질랜드에서 한인 부부들을 대상으로 설문 조사를 진행했다. 2017년 6 월부터 2개월 간, 현지의 교민 104쌍(총 208명)으로부터 온라인-오프라인 응답지를 수집하여 위 계적 회귀분석을 실시한 결과, 배우자의 영어학습 의지는 물론 자신의 영어학습 의지 역시 배우자 의 자존감과 행복감에 각각 유의하게 작용하는 것으로 드러났다. 반면, 부부의 영어구사 역량은 배 우자의 자존감 및 행복감에 주는 영향이 유의하지 않음으로 나타났다. 따라서 뉴질랜드 이민자 부 부의 경우, 현재 각자의 영어구사 역량보다는 공동의 영어학습 의지가 자신은 물론 배우자의 자아 존중과 개인 행복에 강하게 작용하는 것으로 설명된다. 따라서 부부가 참여하는 과정이나 공동의 관심 주제를 반영한 현지 성인영어 교육이 필요하다고 본다. 이번에 실험한 모델과 설명된 변수들 을 토대로, 타 영어권 국가들의 한인 부부를 대상으로 확장된 연구 조사를 통해 분석 결과의 일반 화를 꾀하고자 한다.

This research investigates the influences of language competence and learning intention on immigrants social activities in an English-speaking environment, thereby examining how the related factors interact with immigrant couples and their self-esteem and happiness. To to this, amongst Korean couples in New Zealand, this work tested multiple variables in English language competence and English learning intention on self-esteem and happiness; a research framework was first designed in line with the Actor-Partner interdependence model (APIM), and theoretical variables were then arranged into the framework based on previous research on immigrants language competency and learning intention in English as well as self-esteem and happiness. A combined online-offline survey was conducted throughout New Zealand in June-August 2017, followed by a hierarchical regression analysis using data collected from 104 Korean couples(i.e. 208 persons in conjugal relations). The results explain that English learning intention is significantly interdependent with the partner s self-esteem and happiness, while English language competence is little interdependent; in particular, among Korean-New Zealand couples, English learning intention of actors exerts the strong influence on self-esteem and happiness against their partners. To generalize the outcomes from this study, further research in different countries will be performed in more overseas Korean couples.
