In order to investigate the influence o f implant materials, functional stress and width of channel on the tissue reaction around implants, the tissues around the endosseous implants were observed histopathologically. The manflibular left 2nd,3rd and 4th premolars o f 12 healthy dogs (25-40 kg body weight) were extracted. Three months after extraction, pure titanium blade-vent implants (K.L. Blade Implant, DAE WON KANG UP Co., Ltd., KOREA Design by Dr. H.K. KIM) and carbon-coated titanium implants (K.L. Blade Implant, DAE WON KANG UP Co., Ltd., KOREA Design by Dr. H.K. KIM) were implanted into the 3rd premolar regions seperately. For implantation, 12 dogs were divided into 6 groups as follows; GroupⅠ(functional implant); Implantation o f titanium blade-vent implant with cone-shaped chrome-cobalt crown into the narrow channel (width approximately 1 mm, which was almost equal to that o f implant). GroupⅡ(non-functional implant); Implantation of titanium balde-vent implant without head into the narrow channel (width approximately 1 mm). A GroupⅢ(non-functional implant); Implantation of titanium blade-vent implant without head into the wide channel (width approximately 2.5 mm, which was 1.5 mm wider than that of implant). GroupⅣ(functional implant); Implantation of carbon-coated blade-vent implant by the same method as group I. GroupⅤ(non-functional implant); Implantation of carbon-coated implant by the same method as groupⅡ. GroupⅥ(non-functional implan狀 Implantation o f carbon-coated implant by the same method as groupⅢ. Six months after implantation, the tissue blocks containing the implants were removed. These block sections were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for 2 days and decalcified in 15% formic acid. The buccal side of the blocks were removed with a knife and the implants were detached from the blocks. The tissue blocks were embedded by paraffin embedding method and then sectioned by 5-7 jum thickness. Those specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The results obtained were as follows. 1. Fibrous capsules existed around the functional implants, but were not observed around the non-functional implants embedded into the narrow channels. 2. Fibrous capsules were observed around the implants inserted into the wide channel even though they were embedded into the bone. 3. There was little difference between the tissue reaction to the pure titanium implants and that to the carbon-coated implants. 4. No abnomal changes were found in the fibrous connective tissue and the osseous tissue around the titanium and carbon-coated implants.
