The Transformation of Marital Relationships of North Korean Defectors

본 연구의 목적은 북한이탈여성의 경험을 중심으로 북한이탈주민의 부부관계 변화과정을 알아보고 이에 영향을 미치는 요인을 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 북한이탈주민 부부인 여성 10명을 대상으 로 심층면접을 실시하였으며, 질적 연구방법 가운데 근거이론 방법(Corbin & Strauss, 2008; Strauss & Corbin, 1998)을 적용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 본 연구 결과, 100개의 개념과 33개의 하위범주, 15개의 범주가 나타났으며, 북한이탈주민의 부부관계 변화과정에 대한 패러다임의 모형이 도출되었다. 본 연 구결과 북한이탈주민의 부부관계 변화과정에서 북한이탈주민 부부는 ‘적응의 시간차로 인한 불협화 음’이라는 중심현상을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 인과적 조건은 ‘이주 전 분리경험’과 ‘북한에서 당 위적인 부부관계’로 나타났으며 맥락적 조건은 ‘가부장적인 북한문화’와 ‘매체 속 남한의 부부문화’로 나타났다. 중심현상에 대한 참여자의 작용/상호작용 전략은 ‘불안정한 남한의 삶에 직면하기’, ‘관계균 형을 위해 인식 전환하기’, ‘안정적 정착을 위해 수용하기’, ‘적응 갈등의 대안 모색하기’, ‘정착을 위 한 동지애 나누기’, ‘우리됨(we-ness)의 의미 찾기’로 나타났다. 중재적 조건은 ‘자녀와의 관계’, ‘남편의 성격특성’으로 나타났으며, ‘부부로 살아감의 의미공유’, ‘안정된 정착을 위한 유연한 관계 재정립’의 결과를 경험하고 있었다. 본 연구는 북한이탈주민의 부부관계 변화과정을 심도 있게 탐색하여 북한이 탈주민 부부의 관계경험과 이에 영향을 미치는 요인을 제시함으로써 북한이탈주민 부부의 문화적응과 정을 적절히 조력하기 위한 학문적, 실천적 시사점을 제시하였다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

Objectives: The purpose of this research was to understand the transformation in the marital relationships of North Korean Defectors. Methods: The researchers conducted in-depth interviews with the spouses of ten North Korean defectors. The interviews were analyzed using Grounded Theory methodology (Corbin & Strauss, 2008; Strauss & Corbin, 1998). Results: The causal conditions for the observed changes in these ten marital relationships included separation anxiety prior to relocation and marital influences while in North Korea. The central phenomenon these spouses experienced was the patriarchal culture of North Korea and the marriage culture of South Korea. Participant responses relating to the central phenomenon included “facing an uncertain life in South Korea,” “changing the perception for a balanced relationship,” “the acceptance of a more stable settlement in South Korea,” “seeking alternative ways for adaptive conflict,” “camaraderie within the shared relationship,” and “finding the meaning of ‘we-ness’.” The intermediary conditions included “child relationships,” “the patriarchal character of the husband,” “the participant’s experience in sharing a meaningful life within a marriage,” and “the reordering of flexible relationships for a more stable relational adaptation.” Conclusions: The focus of this research was to investigate, in depth, the relational changes within these ten couples and to propose the factors that affected them.
