The Function of the Slender Bronze Dagger and its Meaning

세형동검은 세형동검문화를 대표하는 무기류인데, 지금까지 실용무기라기보다는 샤머니즘적인 의례에 사용되는 威儀具로서의 기능이 강조되어 왔다. 그러나 세형동검은 경도와 강도가 가장 좋은 성분조성 비를 보이고 있어서 실용무기로 사용하기에 가장 적합하게 주조되었다. 그리고 검신너비도 막 주조되 었을 때보다 평균 0.5cm 정도 축소되어 있어, 일본열도에서 제기(의기)로 인정되는 검날이 제대로 연 마되지 않은 중세형·광형동검과 대비된다. 또한 야요이시대 옹관묘에서 조사된 피장자의 뼈에 박혀 있 는 세형동검 봉부편들을 통해서 이를 보다 명확하게 확인할 수 있다. 형질인류학적인 분석결과를 토대 로 살펴보면, 일본열도에서 세형동검은 실용무기이며 찌르기를 하는 데 주로 사용되었다. 세형동검문화의 무기체계는 성립기까지는 청동기시대부터 이어져 온 “원격전용 활+근접전용 단병의 검”이 조합을 이루고 있지만 발전 I기에 동과·동모가 등장하면서 “원격전용 활+근접전용 단병의 검+ 근접전용 장병의 과·모”의 무기체계가 만들어져서 삼국시대까지 무기체계의 근간을 이룬다. 따라서 세 형동검의 기능을 샤머니즘적인 의례에 사용된 의기로만 이해해서는 선사시대에서 역사시대로 이어지 는 무기체계의 발달과정을 제대로 설명할 수 없다. 세형동검문화에서 일어난 무기체계의 변동을 문화 인류학의 3가지 전쟁 유형과 결부시켜 보면, 세형동검문화기는 습격에서 대규모 대립으로 전환되는 시 기로 생각된다. 한반도 중남부지역에서는 세형동검문화가 등장·발전하는 기원전 3~2세기에 삼한이 형성되며, 일본열도의 북부 규슈지역에서는 세형동검문화가 파급되면서 소국들이 형성되기 시작한다. 따라서 세형동검문화기의 무기체계 변동과 이로 인한 전쟁 양상의 변화는 시사하는 바가 크다.

The slender bronze dagger has usually been regarded as a ritual artifact for shamanistic ceremonies rather than as a practical weapon. It is highly likely, however, that it may have been used as a practical weapon. This is because the alloy composition of slender bronze daggers is suitable for use as a weapon; it can also be observed that the width of the dagger body gradually became narrower as it was repeatedly sharpened, most likely due to its use as a weapon. Moreover, the fragmented points of slender bronze daggers embedded within the skeletal remains found within the Yayoi jar coffins of Japan point more clearly towards this possibility. The weapons system of the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture during its formative period consisted of the following: the bow and arrow as a ranged weapon for ranged combat + the dagger as melee weapon for close combat. In Phase I of the development period, the weapons system was transformed into the following: the bow and arrow as a ranged weapon for ranged combat + the dagger as a short melee weapon for close combat + the halberd and spear as a long melee weapon for close combat. This weapons system was maintained until the Three Kingdoms Period, forming the foundations of the weapons system for this period. Therefore, the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture Period can be regarded as a time of significant transformations in the weapons system of ancient Korea. In relation to the three types of warfare discussed in anthropological research, the slender bronze dagger culture can be seen to have witnessed a transition from small-scaled raid warfare to large-scaled military warfare. During the third to second centuries BCE, when the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture emerged and developed, Samhan was established in the central-southern regions of Korea. At the same time, small states emerged in Japan following the spread of the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture. Therefore, it can be said that the implications of the changes in the patterns of warfare that took place during the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture period are significant indeed.
