A Study on the Characteristics of Mise en Scéne in Works of Yuri Norstein -With a focus on his Hedgehog in the Fog and Tale of Tales

 • 77

Yuri Norstein, the master of Russian animation, delivers his innate sensibility to the audience through his works. Tale of Tales, which is regarded as his utmost masterpiece, puts many people into a nostalgic mood regardless of nationality, language, and culture even though it has no lines, narrations, or clear narratives. One cannot help wondering how a non-linear narrative-based animation work with no lines can move so many people beyond cultural understanding. As reported in many previous studies, the characteristics of his works, which include the crossing of images with no connectivity, figurative features based on the composition of symbolic motives, and embodiment of poetic word-based images created by the rhythmic senses of repeating composites, may work to deliver the theme-related movement to the audience. Those characteristics are, however, not enough to explain a dreamlike, fantastic atmosphere strongly implied throughout his works. If Tale of Tales presents perfect poetic images, it will surely contain the elements of poetics words to feel the images of topics as well as the poetic meters felt in the compositions and composites. While his individualistic composite technique creates lines in his works and thus a sense of rhythm, it is a visual frame or mise en scéne that works as a poetic language to make up an overall image. While a composite reveals a topic through editing, mise en scéne organizes and directs all the visual materials in a frame and displays the consciousness of a topic throughout the work. This study set out to investigate how mise en scéne, a film criticism term, was applied or transformed in animation that was an image medium in similar contexts to movies. It also aimed to examine the characteristics of mise en scéne prominent in Hedgehog in the Fog and Tale of Tales, two of Norstein s representative works, based on the criteria set above and look into the functions of its products in the works. The findings will hopefully remind future-generation animators based on novelistism of importance of mise en scéne and help them with technical and planning aspects.
