“슈레버 사례”에 대한 교육학적 고찰 – 모리츠 슈레버(M. Schreber)의『칼리패디 또는 아름다움을 위한 교육』(1858)을 중심으로

“Schreber-Case” from Educational Perspective with focus on Kallipädie or Education towards Beauty (1858) by Moritz Schreber

연구목적: 본고가 탐구하고자 하는 것은 다음 두 가지이다. 우선 교육학사에서 거의 다루어진 바 없는 모리츠 슈레버라는 인물과 그의 교육론 그리고 그의 교육적 신념이 투영된 교육실천의 일부를 그의 저서『칼리패디 또는 아름다움을 위한 교육』(1858)을 중심으로 소개하고 공유한다. 둘째, 본고에서는 모리츠 슈레버의 교육이론과 실천이 내포하는 잠재적 영향력을 비판적으로 성찰하되, 그것이 다만 잠재적 차원에 머물렀던 것인지 혹은 어떠한 가시적인 결과로 이어졌는지에 대한 간략한 추론을 그의 둘째 아들 파울 슈레버의 저서『한 정신병자의 회상록』(1903)을 중심으로 전개한다. 연구방법: 본 연구는 문헌연구 방법을 채택하고 있다. 교육학적 자전적 기록물들을 1차 문헌으로 삼고, 전기사적 정신분석학적 관점에서 기술된 2차 문헌들을 보완적으로 활용하고 있다. 연구결과: 교육학사가 기억하지 않았던 모리츠 슈레버의 교육이론과 교육실천에 관한 소개와 공유가 이루어질 것으로 예상된다. 특히 그가 고안하고 활용하였던 ‘교육을 위한 도구·장치’, 그리고 그의 극단적으로 권위주의적인 교육관에 대해서는 비판적 성찰과 재평가가 이루어질 필요가 있다. 다만, 그의 교육이론과 교육실천이 실제적으로 부적 영향을 미쳤는가에 대한 사례연구(파울 슈레버)를 통해서는 가설적 차원에서 잠정적인 판단을 내리며, 암시적 차원의 의미부여를 한다. 논의 및 결론:『칼리패디』(1858)를 중심으로 모리츠 슈레버의 인간관과 교육이론에 대한 교육철학적 교육사학적 논의와 재평가가 필요해 보인다. 아울러 그의 교육실천의 결과에 대한 심도 있는 교육사학적 논의가 요구된다.

Purpose: This study has two purposes: first, it investigates the educational theory and practice of Moritz Schreber based on his book Kallipädie or Education towards Beauty (1858) which has been scarcely an object of attention in the history of modern pedagogy. Second, it tries to critically reflect on its educational influence, even though it can be performed only in a hypothetical dimension, trying to capture the parallelity between Kallipädie or Education towards Beauty (1858) by Moritz Schreber and Memories of My Nervous Illness (1903) by Paul Moritz, the son of Moritz Schreber. Method: This study uses the method of literature research, using educational and autobiographical literature as a main material, and biographical and psychoanalytic researches as second and complementary sources. Results: The educational theory and practice of Moritz Schreber will be recalled and shared among the researchers of education, through which more academic discussion on its educational influence will be motivated. Conclusion: It seems to be necessary to revisit and reevaluate the educational theory and practice by Moritz Schreber and his book Kallipädie from the perspective of philosophy and history of education.
