Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for effective discharge education program about leukemia patients by investigating the nursing needs after discharge. Method: This research design was descriptive study. The subjects of study were 142 patients with leukemia patients who were admitted or visiting OPD at 2 university hospitals in D and B Metropolitan Cities. Data were collected from March 18 to October 31, 2011 and the instrument was used a Leukemia Patients s Discharge care Needs Scale which was modified and revised from Kwon & Eun (1999) s Cancer Patients’s Home care Needs Scale. Results: The degree of nursing needs after discharge was average mean 3.83±0.43 (mean 180.24±20.32). The sub dimension that showed at physical nursing needs score average mean 4.08±0.50, emotional and psychological nursing needs score at 3.87±0.68, socioeconomic nursing needs score at 3.60±0.58, and spiritual nursing needs score at 3.08±0.69. According to general characteristics in the nursing needs after discharge in patients with leukemia, there was a significant difference in age(F=2.765, p=.030), religion(F=2.920, p=.036), diagnosis(F=4.410, p=.014), central line holding(t=2.378, p=.019) and type of treatment(F=3.295, p=.022). Conclusions: These results show that different needs for nursing after discharge depend on the characteristics of the leukemia patients. Therefore, nurses should be put special emphasis on physical care needs of leukemia patients at the time of discharge. Based on the outcomes of the study, it is necessary to design education programs that emphasize meeting patient s needs.
