Effects of Music Therapy on Anxiety for Patients undergoing Regional Anesthesia

Purpose: This study was done to identify effects of music therapy on anxiety for patients undergoing regional anesthesia in the operating room. Methods: This study was a non-equivalent control group pre-posttest design. The participants of this study were recruited from orthopedic surgery department of the Y Hospital in B metropolitan city. The participants of this study were 40 patients. Among them, 20 patients were in the experimental group that used music nursing intervention therapy and the other 20 patients were in the control group without the use of music nursing intervention therapy. Data was collected from November 10, 2003 to April 21, 2004. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, χ²-test, t-test, Repeated Measures ANOVA with SPSS WIN 10.1. Results: Blood pressure, plasma norepinephrine level, and STAI were significantly different between the experimental group and the control group. However, there were no differences in pulse rate, respiration rate and VAS between the two groups. Conclusion: Based on this study, music nursing intervention therapy can be regarded as an effective nursing intervention in relieving anxiety patients with undergoing regional anesthesia. Therefore, music therapy may be an effective nursing intervention to reduce anxiety in patients undergoing regional anesthesia.
