본 연구는 미국과 영국의 교육사회학 분야에서 지난 40여 년 동안 수행되어온 학교효과와 관련된 연구경향을 분석한 것이다. 학교효과 연구들은 크게 학교투입산출 연구, “효과적 학교” 연구 및 학교 조직 효과 연구 등 세 경향으로 나눌 수 있다. 각 학교효과 연구 경향들은 학교효과에 대한 서로 상 이한 개념적, 방법론적 특징을 지니고 있다. 학교효과에 대한 정의를 어떻게 하는가와 새로운 방법론 의 등장 및 적용 여부에 따라서 각기 다른 관점에서 학교가 어떻게 학생들의 학업성취도에 영향을 주는가를 설명하려는 노력을 계속해 왔다. 연대순(年代順)으로 보면 위에서 분류된 세 연구경향이 콜 만보고서에서부터 시작된 학교효과에 대한 연구자들의 시대에 따른 관심의 변화를 반영하기도 하지 만 현재에도 초기에 주류를 이루었던 학교투입산출 연구물들이 적지 않게 보고되고 있다. 위의 세 연구경향에서 사용된 학교효과에 대한 개념과 적용된 분석방법을 종합적으로 분석하고 이러한 각기 다른 개념 및 분석방법 적용과 각 연구들의 결과 및 해석?논의간의 관련성을 살펴보고 각 연구경향 의 특징을 비교한 결과 최근의 학교조직 효과 연구가 교육사회학에서의 실증적인 학교효과 연구에 보다 적합한 것으로 제시되었다.
This study investigates the ways in which quantitative social scientists in the U.S.A. and the U.K. have attempted to examine school effects on student achievement. Since the 1966 publication of the Coleman Report, school effects research broadly categorized as input-output studies, “effective schools” research, and school organizational effects studies has undergone considerable conceptual and methodological change. Each has distinctive features of conceptualizing and modeling school effects. The study aims to address three concerns: (1) identify and describe the major conceptual and methodological approaches to school effects; (2) investigate the relationships between the ways school effects have been substantively conceptualized and the ways they have been statistically modeled; and (3) explore how the ways in which school effects are conceptualized and modeled helps us to account for the nature of the findings, interpretations, and conclusions associated with each of the three approaches. Compared to previous two approaches, this study shows that current school organizational effects research has relatively advantages in terms of conceptualization and methodology. These school organizational effects studies also help us understand the effects schools have on their students’ academic achievement.
