교육사회학을 소개하고, 이해시키고, 연구하기 위해서 교육사회학의 의미와 범위 그리고 정체성에 대해 심도 있게 재고해 볼 필요가 있다. 이 글에서는 교육사회학의 의미와 범위를 파악하기 위해 멀리서부터 가까이로 접근하는 방식을 취했다. 첫째, 교육의 의미를 이해하기 위해 유사 용어부터 비교 · 정리하고 학문으로서의 교육학을 논의하였다. 둘째, 교육학의 하위 영역들을 망라한 후 기초영역(교육역사학, 교육철학, 교육심리학, 교육사회학)을 설명하였다. 셋째, 교육사회학의 인접 영역(교육과정학, 교육행정학, 비교교육학, 교육사회심리학)을 비교 · 기술함으로써 교육사회학의 변화를 개략적으로 소개한 후 한국 교육사회학의 발전을 다룸으로써 교육사회학의 변천과정을 설명하였다. 끝으로, 교육사회학의 필요성을 몇 가지 사례들을 통해 설명하고 교육사회학의 이해와 탐구를 촉구하였다.
The meaning and scope of sociology of education are unclear, even to sociologists of education. Therefore, we need to deeply review the meaning, the scope, and the identity of sociology of education in order to invite students to this area, guide young scholars preparing research projects, and team up with colleagues. I tried to zoom in and out to clarify the scope of the area. First, I compared analogous terms education, training, and indoctrination; education and pedagogy(science of education) etc. being used in the area. Second, I explained the theoretical foundations of education, including history, philosophy, sociology, and psychology of education and other areas of pedagogy, such as curriculum and instruction, educational administration, educational evaluation. Third, I emphasized the necessity of interdisciplinary study with the areas of curriculum and instruction, administration, comparative education, and social psychology of education. Fourth, after historically reviewing the sociology of education in UK and USA I explained the trend of the area in Korea. Finally, I emphasized the necessity of expansion of theory and topic, interchange with other areas in education and social sciences, and consideration about educational field such as schools and other educational institutions.
