우리 사회의 높은 교육열과 정부의 대학 자율화 정책 등으로 고등교육은 1980년대 초반과 1990년대 중반 이후 급속히 확대되었다. 그러나 양적 팽창 위주의 발전 모형을 추구하는 과정에서 우리 대학들은 개별 대학간의 경쟁보다는 소재 지역과 설립 유형, 설립 시기 등에 따라 구조적으로 서열화됨으로써, 고등교육 기회의 확대가 사회의 평등화와 균형 발전을 이루는 데 기여하기보다는 교육 및 사회적 불평등을 강화하는 또 다른 기제로 작용하고 있음이 지적되어 왔다. 그리고 이를 뒷받침하여 여러 연구들이 학생들의 입학 성적의 분포가 이와 같은 대학간 서열체제를 반영하고 있음을 주장하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 우리나라 대학들이 신입생들의 입학 성적에 따라 어떻게 서열화되어 있는가를 실증적으로 분석하기 위해 대학입학수학능력시험이 도입된 1994년부터 2001년까지의 수능시험 점수 분포 및 그 변화 추이를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 고등교육 진학인구의 증가와 더불어, 해를 거듭할수록 대학의 소재 지역, 설립 유형, 설립 시기별로 수능 성적에 따른 서열화 구조가 강화되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 서열화 구조가 갖는 불평등성을 논의하고, 이를 완화하기 위한 정책적 시사점을 도출하였다.
During the last 50 years, the higher education in Korea has rapidly expanded to reach the universal level. Most people has expected that the expansion of higher education would brought a more equal and democratic society. However, many researches still show that there is much difference in educational opportunity between classes. And also, it has been suggested educational and social inequality has been enforced by the stratification structure of universities according to their location, institution type, and the year of founding. I analyzed how the scholastic ability of college students has been changed from 1994 to 2001 to explore the stratification structure of the higher educational institutions. The analysis of the scholastic ability score data showed that the scholastic ability of college freshmen is declining every year in general, and there are clear patterns according to the characteristics of universities such as their location, institution type, the year of founding, and etc. Based on the research findings, I suggested educational and policy implications for decreasing the structured gap between universities and measures for development of higher education at the level of university and government.
