이 글의 목적은 서울시를 중심으로 공간 불평등의 실태를 살펴보고, 그것이 교육과 어떻게 관계되어 있는가를 살펴보는 것이었다. 특별히 사회적 공간으로서 ‘강남’(江南)의 교육적 성격과 의미를 살펴보고, 나아가 공간의 불평등이 교육정책에 주는 함의를 발견하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 공간의 사회성에 관한 이론을 개관하고, 공간적 불평등의 실태를 분석한 다음 교육과의 관계를 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 공간 적 불평등이 교육정책에 주는 시사점을 검토하고자 하였다. 연구방법으로는 선행연구를 검토하여 공간적 불평등의 의미와 내용을 살펴보고, 각종 통계자료를 바탕으로 공간적 불평등과 교육의 관계를 분석하였 다. 이러한 논의는 교육 불평등의 논의와 이해의 지평을 확대하고, 교착상태에 빠져있는 학군제 등과 같 이 거주지를 중심으로 수립된 교육정책의 의미와 한계에 대한 논의를 촉진할 것으로 생각되며, 나아가 계획적으로 형성되는 신도시와 전통 도시의 재구조화 과정에서 발생하는 교육 불평등의 공간성을 이해하 는 데 도움을 줄 것으로 기대된다.
This paper focuses on the educational segregation of urban space, especially on the relation of spatial inequality to education in Gangnam(江南). Using data from different sources, this paper presents some basic facts on the patterns of spatial inequalities in education in Seoul. This paper has three parts. First, this paper tries to understand the social characteristic of urban space to analyze educational segregation and inequality. The rapid urbanization has produced a geographic segregation of affluence and poverty throughout urban space. The second objective is to explore the patterns of educational segregation and describes the spatial segregation of education in urban space. Educational inequality among school districts has grown and may be a source of widening inequality in other realms as well. Last objective is to analyze the implications for educational policy, particularly school districts policy. The facts of spatial inequality of education presented in this paper call for more attention to improving the educational policy based on urban space so as to ensure more equitable education.
