이 논문은 다문화 사회의 교육적 과제를 학교 교육의 핵심으로 들여온 서구 다문화 교육의 방향 성과 그 실천적인 모습을 고찰하여 다문화교육의 다양한 방향성을 살펴보고 한국사회에의 시사점 을 도출하기 위한 목적을 지니고 있다. 다문화 사회를 이루고 있는 대부분의 서구국가들은 자신들 의 사회적ㆍ문화적 맥락과 경제적ㆍ정치적 이해관계 속에서 이주문제와 다문화 교육에 대한 적절 한 해법을 모색해 왔다. 각국의 사회적ㆍ역사적 배경에 따라 다문화 교육의 구체적인 내용과 실행 방식은 차이를 보이지만, 유럽과 북미 등 서구국가들은 이주민 자녀들을 위한 다양한 측면에서의 교육적 지원을 통해 실질적인 교육적 평등을 구현하도록 노력하는 동시에, 지구촌 시대에 다름과 공존이라는 인식의 인프라를 구축하기 위한 시민교육으로서 다문화 교육을 실시하고 있다. 특히, 일반 다수자를 대상으로 하는 학교교육에서의 다문화교육은 타문화에 대한 단순한 지식 획득과 경 험을 넘어 다문화 사회를 살아가는 기본적인 태도를 기르는 체계적인 교육적 훈련이라는 것을 암 시해준다. 또한 세계화, 다문화 시대를 살아가기 위해서는 세계시민으로서의 정체성을 기르는 교육 과 이러한 교육을 담당하기 위한 교사교육 등의 필요성을 우리사회에 시사해주고 있다.
The purpose of this paper is to consider the implications of multicultural education in Europe and North America for Korea, in light of the fact that multicultural education in Korea has recently become an important social and educational issue with the changes in Korea’s position in the national and global context. In Western country, the goal of multicultural education is to affirm democratic principles to recognize and accept the diversity of people and life. It is guided by the principles of openness, equal opportunity and justice, and social unity. In Europe and North America, As such multicultural education is an intimate part of the civic education programs in school. Multicultural education is not about paternalistic sympathy for minorities or simply learning about other cultures; it is about advancing the capacity for critical thinking and reflection through such critical reflection; it is an educational approach based on the principle of mutual equality. In particular, multicultural education in Western country focuses on building ‘perceptive infrastructure’ for differences and co-existence, not on learning diverse culture and knowledge as a simple content at school.
