이 연구는 한국복지패널의 1차 연도 자료를 사용하여 TV 및 인터넷이 여가생활에 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있는 시점에서 한부모가족 구조가 이러한 매체활용에 미치는 영향을 조사하 고 또한 매체활용이 학업성취나 또래관계에 미치는 영향력을 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 연구결 과에 의하면 한부모가족 구조의 결함으로 인한 그 자녀의 과도한 매체활용이 학습을 위한 시 간과 대체관계에 놓여서 학업성취에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 이러한 결과는 한부모가 족이 가지는 특수성, 즉 부모가 자녀의 행동에 대한 통제의 곤란성에 연유한다고 볼 수 있다. 이론적으로 본 연구는 한부모가족의 문제점은 빈곤뿐만 아니라 가족구조에서도 발생할 수 있 다는 것을 보였다. 정책적으로 정보격차 완화를 목적으로 한부모가족 자녀를 대상으로 하는 정보화지원 정책이 교육격차를 증폭시키는 역설적인 상황을 초래할 수 있음을 제시하였다. 한 부모가족에 대한 지원 정책은 동 가정의 부족한 사회적 자본을 충족시키는 방안도 함께 고려 되어야 함을 시사하고 있다.
The study examined the effects of internet searching and TV viewing by children in single-parent households on peer relationship and achievement and found that doing so may narrow digital divide by increasing access to information and communication technology but aggravates the achievement gap by enabling these children to devote too much time to the internet and TV. Previous studies have implied that adverse effects are due to the family structure of single-parent households and particularly the lack of supervision therein. Theoretically, findings confirmed that these children's low achievement in single parent families stem from poverty as well as family structure. From the perspective of public policy, findings suggest that support for single-parent families include securing social capital
