교육사회학 관점에서 한국 고등교육의 변천과 특질 형성을 탐구하는 일은 선택이 아니라 필수다. 이 논문은 한국과 영어권 국가에서 최근 상당한 성과가 축적되고 있는 고등교육을 대 상으로 한 교육사회학연구의 재고조사와 최근 동향을 검토하였다. 앞으로 우리 학계에서 다룸 직한 연구 과제를 전망해 보았다. 영미권에서의 연구는 종래 기초교육을 대상으로 한 연구를 고등교육으로 확대하였기에 주요 과제나 쟁점은 일관되어 있다. 교육과 사회계층,사회이동을 중심축으로 하여 기회평등, 선발, 성평등, 불평등 재생산, 대학생활 효과 연구, 학자 직업화 연 구, 조직과 제도로서 대학, 학문의 자본화 등 영역에서 괄목할 만한 성과를 보여 주고 있다. 다소 시차를 두고 독자적으로 발전시킨 한국에서의 고등교육연구도 핵심 주제는 영미권과 같으나 한국 특유의 현상을 다룬 연구가 추가 되었다. 만민고등교육의 도래나 연구대학의 급 속한 국제순위 상승이 그것이다. 그간의 성과를 바탕으로 앞으로 새 지식과 질서의 집단 창조 기구로 한국 대학의 독특성을 밝힐 필요도 있다. 만민고등이란 현상에서 대학과 경제 간의 불 일치 분석도 필요하다. 한국 고등교육 특유 현상에 대한 탐구는 국제경쟁력 있는 성과를 축적 할 수 있다는 점에서 주목할 필요가 있다.
This review examines partially the state of the arts in the sociology of higher education home and abroad, by exploring major findings and critical issues that require further, targeted study, and with a specific focus on strengths and weaknesses of current research. The sociology of higher education has developed greatly from its nascent stages and is currently influenced by several distinctive schools of thought particular to the Korean context: expansion of opportunities; quality of education; social stratification; reproduction of inequality over generations; gender inequity; linkage between school and work; and public policy analyses. In addition to using the well-established empirical methods, many sociologists extend their approach to ethnographic, comparative, and historical analyses. My goal is to facilitate new theoretical insights and research questions, with an aim to scale up the global competitive edge of research by Korean sociologists of tertiary education.
