이 연구는 경기도의 학교를 대표할 수 있도록 설계된 경기교육종단연구(GEPS) 데이터를 활용하여 혁신학교가 사회경제적 배경에 따른 교육격차를 효과적으로 감소시키고 있는지를 분석하였다. 이 연구에서는 혁신학교가 사회경제적 여건이 열악한 지역에 지정되었으며, 학 교 내 사회자본과 학생 참여 중심의 교수-학습 활동 등‘효과적인 학교’가 갖는 특성들을 공 유하고 있다는 점에 주목하였다. 다층분석을 통해 교육격차 감소에 대한 혁신학교의 효과를 분석한 결과 중고등학교 모두에서 여타의 조건을 통제한 상태에서도 학업성취도가 가정의 사회경제적 배경의 영향을 받는 것으로 나타난 가운데, 일반학교에 비해 혁신학교에서 그 영향력의 정도가 유의하게 작은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 혁신학교가 가정배경의 열 악함이나 낮은 사교육 투자 등과 같은 불리한 조건에 놓여 있음에도 불구하고, 가정배경에 따른 교육격차를 감소시키는 데 기여하고 있다는 것을 의미한다. 나아가 이 연구에서는 교 육격차 감소에 대한 혁신학교의 효과가 중학생에게서 더 뚜렷하게 나타나며, 그 원인이 혁 신학교의 활성화된 학생 중심 수업에서 비롯되고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과들 은 혁신학교가 가정배경이나 교육여건이 불리한 조건에 놓여 있음에도 불구하고, 교육격차 를 감소시키는 데 의미있는 기여를 하고 있음을 시사한다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 이 연구 에서는 사회경제적으로 열악한 조건에 있는 학교를 전략적으로 혁신학교로 지정하는 방법을 도입할 필요가 있으며, 이들 학교가 학생 중심 수업을 위시로 한 혁신학교의 특성을 제대로 구현할 수 있도록 적극적으로 지원할 필요가 있고, 그 성과를 일반학교에 확산할 수 있도록 해야 한다고 제언하였다.
This study analyzes Hyuksin schools’ effect on decreasing the educational gap using GEPS in which schools of Gyoung-gi province are well represented. This study focuses two main characters of Hyuksin schools. The one is that most Hyuksin schools are located in the socio-economically disadvantaged areas. The other is that the Hyuksin school is very similar to effective schools because both have abundant social capital within school and have tried to activate the student-centered instruction. Through multi-level analysis, we found that the effect of SES on academic achievement is smaller in Hyuksin schools after controlled other variables. This result means that Hyuksin schools contribute to decrease the educational gap resulted from SES, although most Hyuksin schools have been suffered from disadvantaged conditions. Furthermore, this study shows that the effect of Hyuksin schools on decreasing the educational gap is more solid in middle school. we confirm that the reason is based on the student-centered instruction which is more widespread in middle school. Through these results, we suggest that it is needed to strategically designate schools for the Hyuksin school in disadvantaged area, although these schools are not well prepared for the Hyuksin school. After appointment, a lot of support have to be poured into these Hyuksin schools. Finally, it is needed to effort to diffuse the successful elements of the Hyuksin school into non-Hyuksin schools.
