본 연구에서는 지금까지 이론적인 탐구가 부족하였던 한국사회의 교육열에 대해, A. Giddens의 하이모더니티론을 근거로 한 이론적인 접근을 시도하였다. 본 연구에서는 특히 부모가 가지는 교육열에 초점을 맞추고, Giddens가 제시한 근대사회의 ‘자아정체성 (self-identity)’에 관한 논의에 입각하여, ‘부모로서의 정체성’과 ‘이차적 부모-자녀 관계’란 개 념을 도출하였다. 이를 통해, 근대사회를 살아가는 부모에게 있어서는 자녀의 교육적 달성이 부모라는 자아의 정체성에 존재론적 안심을 부여하고 또한 그것을 규정짓는 측면이 있다는 점을 지적하였다. 또한, Giddens의 ‘중독(addiction)’의 개념을 차용하여, 자녀의 교육달성을 위한 부모의 교육지원행위는 부모로서의 정체성에 관한 존재론적 불안의 해소라는 의미에서 중독적 행위에 해당한다고 해석하였다. 한편, 위와 같은 현상이 한국사회에서 부각되는 이유 에 대해, 한국의 급격한 근대화에 따른 특징적인 사회구조가 부모로서의 정체성과 밀접히 관련되고 동시에 교육지원행위에 중독적인 의미를 증대시킨다고 해석하였다. 본 논문에서 이루어진 논의는 현대의 한국사회에서 나타나는 부모의 교육열에 대한 이론 적 논의의 가능성을 시사함과 동시에, 경험적 연구물이 대부분을 차지하는 한국교육사회학 계의 풍토에 대해 이론적 연구의 시도를 통한 가설적 이론의 제시라는 의미를 가지고 있다.
The purpose of this article is to theoretically consider parents' educational aspirations within Korean society. As it is well known, parents' educational aspirations within Korean society is percieved as extreme in comparison to other developed countries. However, there is a lack of consideration in regards to this characteristic social phenomena of Korean society from the perspective of sociological theory. In addition, there are only a few arguments about the subjective recognition of parents' educational expectations and educational support behavior for their children's educational achievement. This article focuses on a sociological theory which is High-modernity by A. Giddens to explain parents' educational aspirations within Korean society. From this theoretical perspectives, two explanations are suggested as follows: First, parents' educational aspirations for their children can be viewed as a significant element of Self-identity as a parent, and this has particular influence on the Secondary parent-child relationship. In addition, from the perspective of Self-identity as a parent, parents’ educational support can be viewd as a Addictive behavior. Second, the experience of the rapid modernization of Korean society increased the subjective meaning of educational achievement for the individual, it can be understood as the Reflective interpretation framework of life. Furthermore, Self-identity as a parent and its anxiety related with children’s education could be increased in the rapid modernization. This implies that even though the educational aspirations- especially educational expectation or educational support behavior in Korean society-has been viewed as a type of assumed condition, it can be understood from viewpoint of sociological theory.
