본 연구에서는 최근 대졸청년층의 노동시장 이행 성과에 있어 해외 어학연수의 영향력 변 화를 살펴보고자 하였고, 이를 위해 한국고용정보원의 대졸자직업이동경로조사 자료를 활용 하였다. 먼저 대졸자직업이동경로조사의 최근 5년간 자료를 이용하여 어학연수 규모 및 비 용, 체류국가 등의 변화를 살펴보았다. 다음으로 어학연수 관련 특성 변화가 가장 큰 두 시 점의 자료(2010년 대졸자와 2013년 대졸자)를 비교분석하여 해외 어학연수 경험이 노동시장 이행 성과에 미친 영향에 변화가 있었는지 살펴보았고, 연구방법으로는 다중회귀분석방법과 차우 검정, Gujarati(1970)의 상호작용항을 이용한 검정 방법 등을 사용하였다. 분석 결과, 어 학연수 경험 여부는 시점에 상관없이 대졸 청년층의 노동시장 성과에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났는데, 어학연수를 경험한 집단이 그렇지 않은 집단에 비해 첫 직장 임금이 높을 가능 성이 큰 것으로 나타났다. 하지만, 차우 검정과 Gujarati(1970)의 상호작용항을 이용한 검정 을 통해 2010년과 2013년 대졸자 간에는 노동시장 성과에 영향을 미치는 요인들의 영향력 변화가 확인되었고, 어학연수 경험의 경우 최근 대졸 청년층의 노동시장 성과에 미치는 영 향력이 감소한 것으로 나타났다. 이는 지금까지 대졸 청년층의 졸업 후 노동시장 이행 시 신호기재로의 역할을 하는 것으로 알려졌던 어학연수 경험 등의 역할이 앞으로는 점점 더 감소할 수 있음을 시사한다.
The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of studying foreign languages abroad on labor market outcomes of university graduates in South Korea. We used the Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey(GOMS) compiled by the Korea Employment Information Service between 2010 and 2014. First, we examined the change in scale, cost, and the countries visited for language training. Second, we investigated the change in the effect of studying foreign languages abroad on labor market performance by comparing the salaries of graduates in 2010 and 2013. We used a variety of methods to examine the data, including examining descriptive analyses, multiple-regression analyses, Chow-tests, and analysis of interaction effect on the GOMS data. The results reveal that the experience of language training abroad have a positive influence on graduates’ wage of first-job in both 2010 and 2013. However, the size of the effect declined over time, with lower increase on wages in 2013. This result suggests that the importance of travelling abroad for language training for labor market transition could decline over time.
