이 연구는 중산층 밀집지역에 위치한 으뜸중학교 관리자의 학교운영과 학부모의 관계를 조사하였다. 조사결과, 으뜸중 교장은 학교운영에서 무엇보다 시험관리에 집중하였다. 이는 학부모들과 교사들 간에 빈번한 갈등이 주로 시험과 관련되었기 때문이었다. 교장은 교사들 에게 시험출제와 관련한 사전 연수를 한 달 전부터 실시하였으며, 교과 교사들과 관리자들 이 이중 삼중으로 시험문제를 검토하였다. 문제가 발생하면 해당교사 뿐만 아니라 해당 교 과의 모든 교사들에게 낮은 평가와 성과급을 주었다. 그런데 생활지도와 인성교육에 있어서 는 학생들의 성적 스트레스를 풀어주는 “힐링교육”에 역점을 두었다. 이같은 학교운영방식은 학부모들의 호감도를 높였다. 으뜸중 사례는 중산층 지역에 있는 학교의 기능 변화를 시사 한다. 지식 습득에서 학교 의존도가 낮고 자녀의 성취기대가 높은 으뜸중학교에서는 지식 전수보다는 평가기관으로서의 기능이 강조되었다. 또 다른 변화는 학생들의 불안한 정서를 돌보는 일이 하위층 학교의 주관심사로 여겨졌으나, 이제는 중산층 지역의 학교인 으뜸중학 교에서도 주요 기능이 되었다는 점이다. 물론 그 원인과 현상은 다르지만, 학교가 학생 정서 를 돌보는 일이 이제 학교의 주요 기능이 되고 있었다.
This paper explores the relationship between school management of the principal and parents in a junior high school located in a middle class residential area. The principal strengthened the test management. The teachers received a test training from the principal. They reviewed test problems a number of times among teachers who are in charge of the same subject and who are in charge of the same grade students. She provided different reward teachers based on their performance. Additionally, when there is a mistake in test questions, the teachers who are in charge of the subject would receive the same penalty. Regarding school guidance, the principal focused on healing minds of the students. The students destroyed glasses and were involved in school violence since they suffered from severe achievement stress by parents. This case implies that the main role of schooling in middle class area is not knowledge transmission but testing. More interesting point is that the middle class school came to pay more attention to healing students' unstable mind which was the main problem of lower class schools.
