의료화란 일상의 많은 부분들이 의학적 지식에 따라 관리되고 통제되면서 의료적 개입이 확장되는 현상을 말한다. 교육적으로도 학생에 대한 의료적 개입은 다양한 영역으로 확대되 고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 한국교육에서 의료화 담론의 계보를 분석하는 것이다. 구체적으 로 누구에 의해, 어떠한 의학적 지식과 담론을 바탕으로 학생에 대한 의료적 개입이 이루어 졌는가를 분석하고자 하였다. 연구방법은 권력과 지식 사이의 연결을 추적하여 권력의 실천 과 테크놀로지를 밝히는 Foucault의 계보학적 방법을 활용하였다. 연구 결과, 교육에서 의료 화는 검사의 의료화, 예방의 의료화, 강화의 의료화라는 세 가지 담론으로 구분되었다. 첫째, 검사의 의료화는 의사, 교육심리학자, 그리고 지원자로서의 국가에 의해 주도되었으며, ‘국가 자산으로서의 신체’와 ‘검사를 통한 범주화’ 담론이 중시되었다. 둘째, 예방의 의료화는 국가 가 적극적으로 학생 건강에 개입하였고, 다양한 분야의 의료전문가들이 함께 주도하였다. ‘개인의 자산으로서의 신체’와 ‘정신으로의 의료적 개입의 확장’ 담론이 강조되었다. 마지막, 강화의 의료화는 국가, 의료전문가와 함께 상업적 제약회사가 주도하였으며, ‘인지의 의료적 관리’와 ‘최적화’ 담론이 중시되었다. 의료화는 교육화와 마찬가지로 국가와 사회에 적합한 주체를 생산하는 권력의 테크놀로지로 작용하였다. 그리고 그동안 교육의 문제로 간주되던 것들은 갈수록 의학적 문제로 규정되면서 의료적 실천의 대상이 되어가고 있다.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the genealogy of the dominant medicalization discourse on student’s live in Korea. Medicalization refers to a phenomenon in which our everyday lives are managed through medical knowledge and medical interventions are expanding. This study had two research questions, who managed and controlled medical intervention for students and what were the dominant medicalization discourse on student’s live in school. Genealogical analysis was used as a research method. Foucault’s genealogical analysis is a search for the connection between power and knowledge and reveals the practice and technology of power. The results of this study are follows: the dominant medicalization discourse in school was divided into three types: medicalization of testing, prevention, and enhancement. First, the medicalization of testing was led by doctors, educational psychologists and state as supporter and ‘categorization through testing’ and ‘body as resource of state’ were emphasized. Second, the medicalization of prevention was managed by medical experts from various fields and state as active participant and the dominant discourses were ‘body as resource of individual’ and ‘medical extension to mind’. Finally, the medicalization of enhancement was controlled by pharmaceutical companies along with national and medical experts. Medical intervention was practiced through ‘medical management of cognition’ and ‘optimization’ discourse. We found that medicalization is a power of technology to produce the subjects necessary for society like educationalization. Also, traditionally what has been regarded as an educational problems is increasingly treated as a matter of medical practice.
