이 연구는 휴대폰의 단문자 서비스(Short Message Service: SMS)가 웹 토론을 수행하고 있는 학습자들의 상호작용에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위한 것이다. 대학생으로 구성된 학습자들은 8주간의 간격을 두고 2회에 걸쳐 웹 토론에 참여했다. 이 연구의 처치변수는 SMS를 사용하여 토론 진행상황에 대한 정보를 제공하는 것이었다. 첫 번째 웹 토론에서는 SMS가 활용되지 않았으나 두 번째 웹 토론에서는 SMS를 활용하여 토론 진행정보를 제공하였다. 학습자들의 상호작용 정도를 측정하기 위하여 토론 시기별로 학습자 1인당 게재한 평균 글의 수와 원 글에 대하여 답 글이 게재될 때까지의 반응시간이 측정되었다. 학습자들이 SMS에 의한 토론 진행 정보를 제공 받는다고 해서 항상 더 많은 글을 게재하지는 않았지만, 토론 중반기에서는 SMS가 없을 때 보다 더 많은 글을 게재하는 것으로 나타났다. 토론 중반기에 게재된 글들은 대체로 아이디어 형성, 역할분담, 간단한 피드백 등과 관련되어 있었다. 또한 SMS에 의해서 토론 진행에 대한 정보를 제공받음으로써 원 글에 대한 답 글의 반응시간은 SMS에 의해 토론과정에 대한 정보를 제공받을 때 더 짧은 것으로 나타났다. 빠른 반응시간과 게재 글 수의 증가는 SMS가 협력적 과제해결을 위한 웹 토론에서 긍정적 학습결과를 유도할 수 있다는 점을 시사하고 있다.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of providing information of Web discussion to increase the interactions between group members during Web discussion. The participants were twenty of college students, and they were randomly grouped into five with four members. Students were participated into two sessions of Web discussion. The independent variable of this study was the presence and absence of Short Message Serve(SMS) via mobile phone. Two dependent variables were measured for this study. The first dependent variable was the frequencies of upload message per student to the Web discussion in terms of three periods of discussion: 1) early , 2) middle, and 3) final periods of discussion. The second dependent variable was the response date of reply to a message. With respect to the first dependent variable, when students were in the first web discussion, SMS was not given. However, for the second web discussion, the information of how many discussions were upload to the web discussion through SMS. The result of the study showed that providing SMS significantly affected on the frequencies of uploading message in the middle of discussion. However, there were no difference in the early and final periods of discussion. For the second dependent variable of this study, the response date of reply to a message was significantly decreased when SMS was given to students. It indicated that SMS could increase learner's awareness of the discussion process; thus, it positively affected on increasing the interaction between students during the Web discussion.
