이 글은 교사의 의사소통에 관한 기존 연구들이 의사소통 수단으로서의 침묵의 기능과 중요성에 대해 간과해 왔음을 지적하고, 의사소통적 침묵이 교수학습 상황에서 어떤 교육적 기능을 수행할 수 있는지를 밝히는데 초점을 두었다. 연구의 결과, 교사의 의사소통적 침묵은 전달하고자 하는 지식을 더 강조하고, 감정이나 느낌을 효과적으로 전달할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 개념간의 경계표시 기능과 지식을 내면화할 시간적 여유를 제공함으로써 학습자의 지식 획득과 내면화를 조장할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 관심을 유발하고 주의집중을 시키는 기능을 수행하며, 교사와 학습자간의 연결감을 강화할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 학습자에게 스스로 깨닫고 발전할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 수 있음도 고찰할 수 있었다. 그리고 교사의 의사소통적 침묵에 대한 새로운 이해 그리고 교사의 침묵이 지니는 교수학습 상황에서의 교육적 기능과 학습자에의 영향력에 대한 논의를 통해 교사가 의사소통적 침묵을 통해 자신이 전달하고자 하는 내용이나 메시지의 전달력을 배가할 수 있으며, 학습자의 교육적 성장을 조장할 수 있음도 살펴보았다. 그러나 교사가 의사소통적 침묵을 교육적이고 긍정적으로 활용하려면 여러 어려움이 따르므로 이의 이론화를 위한 연구뿐 아니라 성공적인 모델 제시를 위한 사례연구 등이 필요하다는 것을 논의하였다.
The aim of this study was to make a discovery to educational function and meaning of teacher's communicative silence. And result of this study were performed in detail as follows; Teacher' communicative silence has many possible meanings and does variable functions. It does functions that strengthen transmission of messages and feeling, promote acquirement of knowledge and its internalization of learner, strengthen the atmosphere and rapport between teacher and learners, offer listening closely of learner's expression, wait and forbear teacher. Accordingly, need study that remedy current communication model's defects through inclusion of communicative silence. And need study how interpretation of silence varies by culture and context and how Korean interpret silence. Finally, need certainly place model of communicative silence and opportunity of practice at teacher's qualification theories and curriculum. And for this, need continued studies.
