교육 실천 및 연구 분야에서 페이스북은 잠재적 유용성에 초점을 맞춘 긍정적 관점과 교육적 부적 합성이나 한계를 조명하는 관점이 공존하고 있다. 이러한 논란은 페이스북 활용 교육의 복합적 특성에 대한 탐색을 필요로 한다는 인식 하에, 본 연구는 봉사학습 과목에서 페이스북 참여도 및 반응에 관계된 요인을 탐색하는 연구를 실시하였다. 본 연구는 봉사학습 과목을 수강하는 31명의 대학생을 대상으로 1학기 동안 페이스북 상에서 성찰일지 공유, 동료 간 피드백, 온라인 토론의 학습활동들을 제공하고, 학습회차, 학습자 특성, 학습활동 유형에 따른 수강자의 페이스북 참여도 및 반응을 분석 하였다. 연구 결과, 학습회차에 따라 성찰일지 공유와 온라인 토론 참여도 차이는 유의한 반면, 동료간 피드백 참여도 차이는 유의하지 않았다. 학습자 특성 중 연령에 따른 동료 간 피드백 참여도 차이는 유의하였으나, 성별과 SNS 태도에 따른 페이스북 참여도 차이는 유의하지 않았다. 면담 분석 결과, 인지적 및 정의적 측면에서의 잠재적 효과와 접근성, 사용 용이성, 즉시성, 편안함의 강점, 그리고 인터페이스의 복잡성, 디바이스 의존성, 사생활 침해, 문서 공유 및 검색의 제한점이 언급되었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로, 본 연구는 봉사학습에서 페이스북의 교육적 잠재력과 교육적 한계를 논의하였고, 페이스북의 전략적 활용방안을 제언하였다.
The aim of this study is to explore the educational potential of Facebook in service-learning. The present study implemented the mixed research in order to investigate how students have engaged in the learning activities according to the period and learner characteristics through Facebook and what students have experienced at that process. The participants are 31 undergraduates enrolled in the service-learning course at the Y university in Seoul, Korea during the fall semester 2011. They took a workshop, 2 rounds of e-journaling, peer feedback and online discussion in Facebook in addition to the lecture and individual volunteer work. The findings showed that their engagements of e-journaling and discussion increased significantly with time, while their engagements of peer feedback didn’t. The results also stated that only age of learner characteristics significantly affected their engagements of peer feedback. The three participants also informed that e-journaling and online discussion had promoted their cognitive and affective achievement. The study partially approved the positive educational potential of Facebook and suggested the guideline of how to utilize Facebook for a formal learning in service-learning.
