본 논문의 목적은 병적학의 관점에서 프리다 칼로의 작품세계를 고찰하여 작품들의 배후에 있는 창조성의 근원을 알아보는 것이다. 병적학의 관점에서 볼 때, 칼로는 경계선 인격장애를 가진 것으로 추정되며, 그녀의 작품세계는 몸과 마음의 구원을 향한 작품의 제작과정이었다고 할 수 있다. 칼로는 47년간의 생애에서 중대한 사건들로 인해 몸과 마음의 고통과 절망이라는 정신적 위기를 맞이하였고, 그 때마다 작품을 제작하는 가운데 그 위기를 극복하고자 하였다. 다시 말해 칼로의 작품세계는 교통사고와 결혼 후 남편의 불륜, 유산과 불임이 라는 외적 사건에 의한 고통과 절망 그리고 그것으로부터의 구원과 부활의 과정이었던 것이다. 칼로가 자신의 몸과 마음의 고통과 절망을 극복하는 과정에서 드러난 여성성의 근원적인 부분에 대한 적나라한 노출은 당시 로서는 받아들이기 어려운 획기적인 것이었다. 그것은 자신의 몸과 마음의 구원을 향한 작품의 제작과정이었고, 그 배후에 있는 것이 경계선 인격장애의 심성과 정신적 편력이었다. 이와 같이 예술작품에 대한 병적학적 접근 은 예술작품에 나타난 창조성의 근원을 밝혀줌으로써 미술가의 작품세계뿐만 아니라 미술치료에서 내담자의 작품세계에 대한 이해를 더욱 심화시킬 수 있다.
The purpose of this paper is to study the source of creativity underlying Frida Kahlo's artwork from the perspective of pathography. From this perspective, Kahlo is assumed to have developed borderline personality disorder, and her artwork is seen as a process of saving herself and relieving her physical and mental agonies. During her 47 years of life, Kahlo had tremendous crises both mentally and physically; however, whenever she had problems, she strove to overcome them by producing artwork. In other words, the world represented in Kahlo's artwork shows the process of revival and salvation after her traumas, including a car accident, her husband's infidelity, her miscarriage, and her subsequent sterility. The frank disclosure of her sexuality, which was revealed in the course of recovery, was a sensational issue at the time. It was the production process of art towards the salvation of her body and mind, through the illness of borderline personality disorder and distractions of mental wanderings. In conclusion, a pathological approach to artwork deepens one's comprehension of the artwork by revealing the source of an artist's creativity. This can also assist clients' artworks in the form of art therapy.
