A Study on the Middle School Boys’ Interest in Fine Arts Activities

The results of the present research for the interest degree in each field of fine arts activities, which has performed about the middle school boys in Seoul, are as follows. In the field painting, students show more interest in participating outdoor painting contests and drawing comic or imaginary pictures than in illustrating books and painting in Chiness ink. In the field of appreciation, students are more interested in watching slidefilms and visiting museums, old temples and art exhibitions than in studying the history of fine arts and appreciating the works in the classroom. In the field of design, students are more interested in making decoration candles, clay vessels and saucers for flowerpots than in making decoration bottles. In the field of carving and modeling, students like the space composition with thread. correlations among the students’ interests in each field of fine arts are as follows. the correlation coefficients take the values of 0.38 for painting and design, 0.28 for painting and appreciation, 0.32 for painting and modeling, 0.27 for design and appreciation, 0.44 for design and modeling, and 0.38 for appreciation and modeling. General tendency of students’ interests in fine arts is as follows. As a whole, students do not show much interest in fine arts activities compared with other school subjects. Especially, they show the least interest in carving and modeling in the field of drawing, they like drawing comic or imaginary pictures which differ from traditional arts. Students’ desposition to dislike deep thinking is exposed in the field of appreciation. They show quite a good interest in outdoor studies such as visiting old temples, art exhibitions and museums. Among each field, they show the most interest in design.
