The activity of appreciation develops the judging ability by understanding art and by establishing the basic methods of approaching works of art, broadens the territory of the activity of expression, and helps the students have confidence. Now the art education in elementary school should develop the basic ability of appreciation, of the basis of which the students can feel, think, and judge, through the appreciation activity as well as the expression activity. To develop the ability of appreciation teachers should prepare materials systematically, make a study of teaching methods continuously, and, to get the students intimate with seeing activity, prepare for them the conditions as follows : First, opportunities I which the students can see nature, works of art, and their environment seriously should be provided, and various observations should be guided out of them. Second, materials for appreciation, out of which various creative expressions can be guided should be prepared, and presented in due time and in due way. Third, materials with the characteristics of various cultures should be presented to eveke the interest in the traditional and modern arts both home and abroad. Especially, by exposing the students frequently to our traditional work of art, the feelings of intimacy and pride can be promoted. Fourth, the role and importance of art should be realized by helping the students understand the art culture in midst of ordinary life. Fifth, the students’ to visit art museums should be provided so frequently that the students can aeqquire a profound understanding of and intimacy with art. Seventh, opportunities to express the students’ own thoughts frankly and freely should be provided.
