There have been a lot of researches on the modern art education in Korea these Gays. But we can hardly find out any researches on the traditional arc education. We need to look back into the past in order to achieve development of the future, This study aims at providing the first steps for establishing the history of Korean art education. Each dynasty had its own art academy in Korean art history. Silla(新羅) dynasty run the art academy named Chae-jeon(彩典). Koryo(高麗) and Cho-son(朝鮮) also run To-wha-won(圖畵院). These academies served royal family minting art work and decorating the palace. At the same time they had the function of art education to bring up the excellent painters. As the educating system of the art academy there were entrance examination, intermediate test and grading the student's ability. Their ability was graded by number. And it was also assessed by sentence which described the painter's special quality. This descriptive assessment is also advisable in art education today. In traditional art society there were two kinds of painters. One was the professional, painter who worked at the royal academy. The other was the amateur painter who was the literary man. The purpose of art education for the professional artists was to prornote artistic skill. On the other hand the one for the literary painters was to build up their desirable character. Today we must integrate the two elements in art education, artistic skill and good personality. Artistic skill must be promoted by art education in order to strengthen industrial competitiveness especially in international market. At the smile time good personality must be cultivated through art education in order to establish an ideal society. In this context the study on the traditional art education win help La create better foundation for the theory of Korean art education in the future.
