Age and gender differences of subject matters on children's drawings

To analyze the subject matters on children's drawings, 1,044 samples were collected. For the statistical treatment, chi-square test, ANOVA, and frequency were used. The age range of participants is from 3 yr to Ilyr, One of the most popular drawing subjects of our children is human beings, followed by flowers, trees. houses, transportation. and birds/insects. The developmental stage and the contents of art textbook influence preference of subject matters on children's drawings, Boys tend to draw significantly more transportation, spaceships/rockets, dinosaurs, robots, fish. On the other hand, girls tend to draw significantly more people, plants, houses, playgrounds, birds/insects. Almost all 3-year-olds draw only one subject matter, but 6- through 8-year-olds draw more than two subject matters in one drawing. From 9-year-olds, they tend to draw in detail thus, the number of subject matters decreases again. Generally, girls draw more subject matters in one drawing than boys do.
