The purpose of this study is to explore a way in which art education should correspond to the 21st sociocultural demand. This study analyzed the sociocultural phenomena, a change of their underpinning ideas, and an emergence of the postmodern art in view of a change of the periodic conditions that circumscribes the art education. As a result, this study identifies that the popularization, cyberization, commercialization, and globalization of the culture characterize our information society, and that art education should encounter these. That is, art education needs to take into consideration of the epistemic nature of knowledge or image constructed socially and individually in larger or situational context. This study found that the current transformation into postmodern art demands us of a shift of our views in the dimension of the nature of art education, and its contents and methods. Against such theoretical backdrops, this study conducted discussion on the noteworthy feature of newly art education in the following four points; i.e., the consistency and change of modernism, the emphasis of the importance of the sociocultural context, the enlargement of a view of culture, and the transformation into multiple reality. Conclusively, the necessity postulates follow-up studies should be made efforts to take theoretical discourses of this study into a practical consideration, in order to bring about fore a concrete accomplishment of a curriculum development and a change in education settings through this study.
