In art education area, studies on the assessment including performance assessment have been activated with the help of the 7th National Curriculum. In art education, however, the assessment is regarded as that of children's artwork. The assessment itself includes not only that of children's artwork but also that of national curriculum, the degree of learner's achievement on learning objectives, learning contents, instructional methods, instructional materials, the process and the body of children's artwork, studio abilities, attitude in preparing, participating, and art producing, creativity, knowledge/understanding/interpretation/judgment, educational environment, which means, the whole assessment related to art education. The purpose of the study was to examine the characteristics of the assessment In art education and to provide the basis in order to develop qualified, valid and reliable assessment tools in art education. The study included the characteristics of art education, researches done on the assessment in art education, and achievement and assessment standards. Assessment is the measurement of the quality and quantity of achievement. The recommendations for the study were follows: 1) pre-service and in-service teacher education is needed for enhancing their aesthetic abilities which can serve as the basis at assessing and evaluating in art education setting with self-confidence, 2) more distinctively described assessment standards In art education is needed, 3) the whole procedure in assessment should be considered whenever assessment is executed. The whole procedure includes the purpose and the use of assessment decided, the subject and the object decided when assessing, the contents and the time for assessment decided, methodological strategies planned, exemplar answer and grading standards decided, executing the assessment, analysis of the result of assessment, and finally feedback of the result to learning and teaching activities.
