The History and the Problem of the Art-related Study in Korean College Education

  • 55

Art-related studies have been taught in Korean colleges for 50 years, beginning with the establishment of the Seoul National University's arts aesthetics program in 1953. In the 1970s and 80s, art-related studies have developed drastically with the opening of archeology and art history programs. Further amalgamation with cultural industry, business, cultural assets, and education in the 1990s has transformed art-related studies into cultural arts studies. Because of the huge gap between the reality of college education and the needs of the society, the number of unemployed college graduates increased. The lack of resources, including reports and dissertations regarding art-related programs, made the research for this dissertation harder. However, through the overview of the historical outline and the present state within the past 50 years, the analysis of the problems in the art-related studies and its solutions have been suggested to fit the fast-changing situations. Furthermore, the interests of the younger generation, such as management, planning, art appraisal, and auction, have been satisfied through realistic suggestions, foreign case studies, and corporate scholar research programs. The purpose of this dissertation is to redefine the problem of modern art-related programs and to identify the feasible solutions.
