The purpose of this study was to establish and strengthen academic systematization of art education in school subjects in Korea. The study included 1) 'art education' and 'an art subject in school education', and 2) 'content-matter in art subject' and 'art teacher education', as two key points for developing studies in art education as a academic study. Even though there have been many studies done in art education, most of them were not about macroscopic view points like general art-educational theories but about microscopic ones like elementary art education or instructional methods. The main factors of poor progress in studies on art education were follows: 'the special character of art education', 'art educators' lacking interest in its academic theories', and 'lack of support and educational system itself'. The first one, the special character of art education, should be regarded as a good source and element for the development of art education studies. Art itself is an original, undefined, creative, and unlimited area. And art education has same fascinating character as art has. Thus, the study of an art subject in school education has same pros and cons. The recommendations for future studies for establishing and strengthening academic systematization of art education in a school subject. Those are (1) basic and detailed research on content-matter in art subject are needed, and (2) in-service and pre-service art education should be focused on developing expertise in art.
