The purpose of this study is to present Web portfolio assessment as a means to counteract and complement such negative aspects of performance assessment. Ultimately, this study aims at pursuing the means to utilize Web portfolios in art education in preparation for the future. Web portfolios refer to a portfolio produced by using the Web. Namely, a Web portfolio means one produced through the collection, selection and reprocessing of the information one needs by utilizing the Web, where vast amount of information regarding specific topics is organized and provided, in search for up-to-date learning data and materials. Web portfolios have the merit of enabling performance assessment that is simultaneously conducted, while utilizing information and communications technology for learning. The foundation for the Web portfolio assessment has been laid through a literature study regarding the need of portfolio assessment and more specifically, Web portfolio assessment in the subject of art. Also, suggestions have been gathered by investigating cases of domestic Web portfolio assessment. The actual assessment application that utilized a developed Web portfolio assessment model is presented, and a means for Web portfolio assessment utilization to prepare for the future in the subject of art is also pursued. The assessment using Web portfolios in art education will be able to help solve the problems in performance assessment, and may be the most adequate assessment in the new educational environment. The assessment method for the subject of art should be improved in a direction utilizing the Web portfolio assessment method in the years to come.
