오늘날 우리 사회 전반에 학문과 학문 간, 학문과 현실 간 경계를 허무는 통섭(統攝)1)의 분위기가 이미 무르익고 있다. 이러한 통섭의 분위기는 이미 오래 전부터 퓨전(fusion)의 이름으로 영역 간의 경계 허물기와 접목이 행해져 왔다. 특히 포스트모더니즘 이후의 사회 전반적 분위기는 모더니즘의 엄격한 구분에 반(反)하여 각각의 고유한 영역의 뚜렷한 경계가 허물어지면 상호 교류, 접목하는 경향을 띤다. 이러한 현상은 정신과 물질, 이성과 감성, 예술과 일상, 고급문화와 대중문화 등의 이분법적인 경계허물기로 나타난다. 특히 정보기술의 발전과 인터넷의 보급은 여러 분야에서 존재하던 장벽을 허물고 다양한 영역 간의 활발한 교류를 위한 견인차 역할을 담당하고 있다.
This study aims to present a plan of new theoretical subject & curriculum of plastic arts as a scientific consilience. Consilience, or the unity of knowledge, a book by Edward Wilson, in this book, Wilson attempt to explain the bridge of culture gap between the sciences and the humanities. Wilson's assertion is that unite the sciences and unite the sciences with the humanities & arts. Like Wilson's assertion in Consilience, the synthesis of knowledge from different specialized fields of human endeavor is also important in plastic arts education. Because, with the rise of the modern sciences, the sense of unity was lost in the increasing fragmentation and specialization of knowledge and most of the today's issues cannot be solved without integrating knowledge. Therefore, as a viewpoint of Wilson's Consilience, theoretical subject educations of plastic arts are very important to improve the students' ability to develop creative thinking, develop human nature and well-organized training system of arts. But, colleges of art & design in Korea are relatively lacking in this kind of studies and theoretical educational system. So, it is necessary to study on theoretical education system & curriculum of plastic arts in point of interdisciplinary approach, multidisciplinary approach, transdisciplinary approach beyond the boundaries of studies. And this pont of approaches have almost the same view of Wilson's Consilience. Through this study, those of the followings are analysed in details: 1) the necessity of consilience studies in theoretical arts education, 2) the study of education model based on scientific consilience, 3) improvement & practical application for consilience in plastic arts education New theoretical subject & curriculum of plastic arts as a scientific consilience, will be a new educational paradigm in college of arts.
