English Course of Korean Art Appreciation As Cross-Cultural Art Education

  • 60

I have taught Korean art appreciation class for four years at a college to the international foreign students and Korean students. In the classroom setting, I found its cross-cultural aspects of art education such as the combination of international-foreign students and Korean students, their diverse backgrounds and motives of taking the course, and teaching Korean art and culture in English, a foreign-international language. Through this study, I found teaching Korean art appreciation course in English as a practical example of cross-cultural art education. This study reflects the current issues of English medium instruction (non-english subjects in English) which is booming in Korea's higher education. The finding of this study is that the English course of Korean art appreciation let students understand Korean art as a cultural and historical products and basic to human survival and helps the students develop their awareness of their own cultures and identities as well as those of others'. This study suggests the English course of Korean art appreciation in the classroom with foreign and Korean students as cross-cultural art education is for the students a means to teach tolerance and empathy and a nourishing environment to make global citizens in this inevitably globalized and multiculturalized Korean society.
