Leibniz and the Problem of the Immortality of the Soul

This paper aims to deal with Leibniz’s argument on the problem of the immortality of the soul. This argument was one of major issues in early modern philosophy in that it contained his own position as well as his critique of Descartes’s argument of the immortality. Leibniz’s argument is also historically important since he considers his attempt to prove the immortality as a part of critique of atheism in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Futhermore, the problem of the immortality of the soul is closely linked with the controversy over the relation between faith and reason, or religion and philosophy in the Middle Ages. Leibniz tries to hold that revealed truth could be reconciled with reason as well as prove philosophically the Christian doctrines such as the immortality of the soul. This leads us to maintain that Leibniz’s argument is largely continuous with the mainstream of medieval thought.
