‘사이좋다’의 起源에 對한 小考

A Preliminary Research on the Origin of Saicoh- (사이좋다)

본 논문 ‘사이좋다’의 기원에 대해 다룬 것이다. ‘사이좋다’는 {인간관계}의 ‘사이’와 형용사‘좋다’가 결합해 있는 것으로 분석되어 단어형성도 그렇게 되었을 것으로 보인다. 그러나 공간개념인 {틈}을 뜻하는 ‘사이’가 {인간관계}의 용법으로 쓰이게 된 역사는 생각보다 길지 않고‘사이좋다’의 통사적 특징이, {인간관계}의 용법으로 쓰인 ‘사이’의 초기 문례들과 양립하지 않는다. 의미론적 특성과 관련하여, ‘사이’가 {인간관계}의 의미를 가지게 되는 과정은 비약적이 며, 통사론적 특성과 관련하여, {인간관계}의 ‘사이’가 수식어 없이 단독으로 {인간관계}의 의미로 쓰이게 되는 과정도 연속적이지 않다. 본고는 일본어 ‘なか’(仲, 관계, 사이) 및 ‘仲よし’의 번역차용이 ‘사이’와 ‘사이좋다’에 영향을 주었을 것으로 추정하였다.

This paper is a try to identify the origin of a Korean verb saicoh- ‘사이좋-, to be in good relationship’. At a glace it looks like a simpe combination between sai ‘사이, relationship’, a noun and coh- ‘좋-, to be good’, an adjectival verb stem. However sai ‘사이’ originally means physical space bewteen two referents, and the ‘relationship’ usage has very recently surfaced. Moreover the syntactic features of saicoh- ‘사이좋-’ are not compatible with sai ‘사이’ of ‘relationship’ usage in the texts where such a usage has started to appear. The ‘relationship’ usage of sai ‘사이’ is not the result of gradual sementac development; and the syntactic feature that sai ‘사이’ alone means ‘relationship’ without precedent modifying NP is come to be used abruptly, unable to trace the change. This paper presumes these usages are calqued from Japanese naka ‘なか, relationship’, naka-yoshi ‘仲よし, relationship-good’.
