A Study of the Relationship Between the Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome and the Risk Factors Associated with Age and BMI of Industrial Male Organic Solvent Workers

  • 46

This study was conducted to gain a better understanding of the impact of age and BMI on the risk factors of metabolic syndrome. 855 industrial male organic solvent workers were studied to obtain these findings. The results were as follows : 37.0% of the subjects had a normal BMI, 35.8% had a BMI that is overweight, and 27.3% had a BMI that made them obese. The mean values of WC, SBP, DBP, FBS, TG, and HDL-cholesterol levels were all in the normal range. The more the age and BMI increased in the male workers, the more the mean values increased in WC, SBP, DBP, FBS, and TG levels, but, the more the mean values decreased in HDL-cholesterol levels. As for abnormal number of risk factors of metabolic syndrome in the subjects: 25.5% showed none, 32.5% showed 1, 25.8% showed 2, 12.3% showed 3, 3.2% showed 4, and 0.7% showed all 5. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the industrial male organic solvent workers that were studied was 16.2%. The abnormal frequency of risk factors of metabolic syndrome that this study found were as following: WC (7.0%), BP (50.3%), FBS (39.4%), TG (28.1%), and HDL-cholesterol (12.5%).
